First-grade students at Kent Elementary School recently had a special guest reader in class, Assemblyman Kevin Byrne, to continue our Read Across America celebrations. At the May 24 Board of Education meeting, fourth-grade music enrichment students from Kent Elementary performed for the community.

Throughout the year, students prepared for their final music concert as Kent Elementary students with songs from around the world. This year’s concert was a celebration of culture, language and music and featured songs from six different countries and in five different languages. CHS is also known for its Instrumental and Choral Music programs where students have achieved state and national recognition.

Before we officially depart for the summer break, I would like to take this opportunity to share a few messages of appreciation and congratulations. I am writing to you to share the news of a leadership appointment within the district. Our district has already begun the process of reviewing our procedures to determine if any need to be updated in light of the new body-worn camera requirements. We are continuing to work out the specific details about how and when body-worn cameras worn by our SROs will be implemented in certain situations.

Open communication between home and school is an important vehicle for solving problems. In addition to academics and the arts, Carmel High offers over 25 competitive interscholastic teams for boys and girls to compete athletically. CHS is known for exceptional results in Football, Baseball, Track and Field, Cross Country, Swimming and Diving, and Girl's Softball, boys and girls soccer, to name a few. Offerings include Girl's Field Hockey, Lacrosse,Wrestling and all of the major sports typically seen in high school.

Parents must provide their influence as role models and sources of advice for their child during the elementary years. When picking up students from school, please do not take your children into other classrooms or other locations in the building. Once children are signed out, they should be supervised by their parents, and you should exit the building promptly. The school has been extensively refurbished, largely due to the passage of two school bonds that provided upgrades to all schools within the Carmel Unified School District. The most recent bond, passed in 2005, funded the building of the new Center for the Performing Arts and swimming pool, upgraded athletic facilities and added permanent classrooms to replace portables. Carmel High School proudly announced senior Christian Yom as valedictorian and senior Kyle Grgecic as salutatorian for the Class of 2023.

We have plans to re-evaluate this role, as well as the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction role, in spring to determine our next steps. We will continue to update the Carmel community as we work to fill positions permanently. At Tuesday night’s Board of Education meeting, based on my recommendation, Michael Setaro was appointed as the new principal of Kent Elementary School. Michael will begin at Kent Elementary School in September and comes to the district with nearly two decades of educational leadership and teaching experience.

Several music students have received scholarships to such schools as the Berkelee School of Music in Boston, California Academy of the Arts and the University of Southern California. Significant numbers of CHS music students are selected yearly to participate in California Honor choirs and bands. Additionally, they must demonstrate the qualities of character, leadership, and service in the classroom and through extracurricular involvement. A copy of a letter that was sent from Sheriff McConville documenting the reasons for implementation of this program is attached to this email for your reference. Throughout the fall, our strategic planning partner will be conducting conversations with key district leaders, identifying benchmark studies and reviewing our previous strategic plans to create a starting point.

George Fischer Middle School Header News Feed

Not only are Yom and Grgecic the top students of their graduating class, but long-time friends. It was a lesson in shaking, rattling, and rolling for Earth Science students in Tracy Brusie’s classes at George Fischer Middle School during a unit on earthquakes. Students used their geology skills and compasses to interpret seismographs from three separate locations, finding the arrival times of primary waves (p-waves) and secondary waves (s-waves) in order to determine the earthquake's epicenter.

Any student or staff member who has symptoms of respiratory or gastrointestinal infections, such as cough, fever, sore throat, vomiting, or diarrhea, should stay home. If a student or staff member is symptomatic, they will be sent home. My hope is to provide an informal setting and refreshments for open dialogue on select topics during the year. I have scheduled three of these in-person meetings and hope that you will make plans to join me on November 1, February 15 and May 30. Now that the stressors of the pandemic have been greatly reduced and we are able to safely gather together, it is the perfect opportunity to start our Coffee & Connections with the Superintendent events. It has been my desire since I joined the district last year to host regularly scheduled gatherings to hear directly from our parents and community.

As part of a required school health examination, a student is weighed, and his/her height is measured. These numbers are used to figure out the student’s body mass index . The BMI helps the doctor or nurse know if the student’s weight is in a healthy range or is too high or too low. Recent changes to the New York State Education Law require that BMI and weight status groups be included as part of the student’s school health examination. A sample of school districts will be selected to take part in a survey by the New York State Department of Health.
